holy trinity church

Dear Friends,

This morning, I found myself taking a funeral service for a friend in the church where I was ordained and where I served as minister for many years. Although it was a sad occasion, it was also a happy celebration as my friend had lived a long and fulfilled life of Christian service. And for me it was lovely to catch up with old friends who I haven’t seen for many years. Of course we have all inevitably changed, and although I recognised many faces, I did find it hard to put names to some of them!

Being in that church also reminded me of my ordination, and of the vows I made on that day. I’m not sure that at the time I was quite aware of the difference the vows I made would make to my life. All I knew was that at the time I had to make them, and then do my best to keep them. Sometimes it has been very hard, but looking back, I can honestly say that it was the best decision I ever made.

Today in Holy Trinity, a young man will make promises before God which I know he will do his best to keep. As he does so, his life will be changed in way that he probably can’t imagine at the moment. Sometimes it will be hard, but as his family in Christ it is our calling to pray for him and encourage him along life’s journey. Indeed, as the body of Christ it is our calling to pray for and encourage each other as we pursue our Christian journey of life. There are times when the going does get tough for all of us, but it is also true to say that God in Christ never asks anything of us that we cannot face in his strength. And with the prayerful encouragement and support of our Christian family we can all move forward in faith.

With love and blessings,

Marion
