Dear Friends,
As I write I have just returned from conducting one of the saddest funerals I have ever had to take. The lady in question had lived for seventy-two years and had a sister who did not wish even to be contacted. When I visited her next-door neighbour, she could tell me nothing about her as the lady had built a high fence around her garden to avoid having any contact with her. In the end I had to dig very deep to find any information at all.
So why am I telling you all this? Well because this whole episode made me ask myself what sort of a mark each of us will each leave behind. The poor lady in question was known to be prickly but as the undertaker and I both agreed, she was still one of God’s creation, still loved by him, and in death, still deserved to be treated with respect.
So as a congregation of God’s people, and as individuals, what sort of a mark do we hope to leave to future generations? I hope and pray that Boarhills, Dunino and St Andrews Holy Trinity will not be remembered as a church struggling to survive, but as a Christian fellowship vital and alive, worshipping God with faith and enthusiasm, and serving the whole community in his name in every way we can.
We know that Jesus came into the world not to be served but to serve. So as his disciples this is what he calls all of us to do in his strength.
With love and blessings,
Marion
