Dear Friends,
Today in Holy Trinity we welcome the ‘Friends of Holy Trinity’ who will have their AGM in the Sharp Aisle after worship. The ‘Friends’ were set up by Tom Duncan and Rev Roy Hill to support the musical tradition of Holy Trinity and all the money raised by the ‘Friends’ goes to support our Choral Scholarships. The choir of Holy Trinity plays an important part in our worship and is greatly valued by the congregation. However, none of this could happen without the support of the ‘Friends’ and we are very grateful to them.
The Reformer John Calvin viewed music as a powerful gift from God designed to praise him and move human hearts. For him the music of worship was a form of prayer that strengthened the church to praise God with “one common voice”. And John Bell tells us that most people learn the theology they know from the hymns that they sing. The Psalmist says ‘Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!’ And we are told that on the night of the Last Supper ‘when the disciples had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives’.
This means that singing has always been an important part of expressing our faith, and is an integral part of worship, and we are grateful to all our musicians and those who support them as they enhance our worship week by week.
With love and blessings,
Marion
