Victor Borge once told a friend that he could tell the time by his piano. His friend found that hard to believe, so Borge volunteered to demonstrate. He pounded out a crashing march on the piano and immediately there came a banging on the wall and a shrill voice screaming “Don’t you know it’s 1:30 in the morning!”
This is an amusing story, but one with a serious message about care and consideration. It is so important to be careful and considerate, and not just considerate about the time you play the piano! It’s about things like how we speak and how we listen, about how we involve people in conversation and allow them to feel that their contribution matters, that they matter. Consideration is about careful thought and kindness to others.
Almost the only time we hear Jesus speak sharply in the scriptures is when he overthrows the tables of the money changers in the Temple, a time when we know he was speaking against the obvious exploitation of the ordinary people who had come to worship. Otherwise, although we know he could be firm, we also know that he spoke kindly. Even to Peter, when he cried out in panic for help as he came to Jesus across the water, he says kindly “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” and helps him into the boat.
We are the present-day disciples of Jesus, and if we come to him, he will always show us kindness and consideration as he encourages us in our work for him.
