Dear Friends,
I have just read a very interesting news article about the joy of a family whose child was able to ring the bell marking the end of her cancer treatment. This lovely tradition in children’s cancer wards all over the country, marks the time when families can again look forward to a future together. There was also a photograph with the article in which the child in question was holding a certificate that showed a rainbow. As you will know, God established the rainbow as a sign of His everlasting covenant with Noah and all life on earth, promising that never again would all life be destroyed by a flood.
In days gone by every parish church had a bell or bells that called people to worship. They made a joyous sound ringing out over the town or village, a reminder of God’s presence in all places in the shape of his body, the church. The rainbow, a symbol of hope, and the bells, calling God’s people.
The rainbow has become a symbol of hope in many contexts, particularly during the pandemic. But sadly, we do not hear our bells being rung as they once were. It would be good to hear them being rung Sunday by Sunday and at other special events in both churches, as a regular reminder to our communities of the presence of the Body of Christ in their midst. Volunteers welcome!
It is so important that all the people of God of every denomination make themselves known and their presence felt as they are able. It is one of the ways that others will be attracted both to worship, and to the hope and promise for the future that God offers to all people.
With love and blessings,
Marion
